Technology is Making the Office Obsolete

Offices are nearly needless in today’s working environment as digital storage can be held and accessed from anywhere. Skype is now part of Facebook, virtually guaranteeing every employee can attend a meeting. Productivity, costs-analysis, day-to-day monitoring, and budget building can all be performed on a computer anywhere so long as it can link to a collective server.

That’s not to mention the fact that by the end of 2011 it’s estimated that 50 percent of the working population will either have an iPhone, Blackberry, Samsung or HTC Android phone, or some other model of smartphone. We will all be connected and capable of doing the majority of our jobs from home so long as the majority of our job entails answering emails, assembling documents, and inputting data into spreadsheets..

Critics question the reliance on cloud computing and tend to focus on the reasons why the traditional office still persists. Many claim that otherwise it’s impossible to control productivity. Others say it removes the team dynamic. But the biggest common sense reason why an office could still be considered important is that businesses, especially small businesses, need to have an environment to showcase themselves inside and a physical place to establish an authentic presence.

While as of 2011 it’s still important for many businesses to present themselves with an established office, the future of the office doesn’t look so bright. For one, the majority of consumers are deciding which service provider they do business with based not on who has the most spotless floor and nicest employees, but who looks the best according to websites and online reviews. Two, studies are showing that people not only prefer to work remotely, but that doing so actually increases their productivity. Three, further economic downgrading in the United States is going to create competition wherein those who spend on the costs of an office are at a disadvantage to those who skip the office altogether.

If you aren’t a fan of the office, count on it becoming an obsolete part of the work environment within the next decade or so. It’ll make those long days looking at the water cooler go by a little bit better. In the meantime, continue to encourage the utilization of remote-based means to run a business. Either you’ll possibly convince an employer to give in on a few measure, or get good ideas on how to start your own office-less business.

Options: Internet Choices

There are many different reasons that people want to purchase a PC or laptop. One of the main reasons that most have stated is to have access to the information super highway. This gives you the ability to send and receive email from all over the world. You can browse websites like http://www.direct.tv and others whenever you want or need. It also allows them to play numerous online games with people from all over.

The internet consists of many various networks. These networks are other computers connected to more computers for the sole purpose of exchanging information. There is not one individual that owns the internet itself; however, people and organizations can own individual pieces. For example computers that is called servers, and various multiple communication lines, which the entire thing is supervised by a nonprofit society that sets standard protocol and ensures that everything flows smoothly.

To have access to online information a person needs two things: a PC and an ISP (Internet Service Provider) There are numerous types of ISP’s. Here are a few:

  • Hi-speed providers- these are also sometimes referred to “broadband” providers. Two options are available when it comes to broadband internet access: DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and cable, which comes with TV packages. The benefits of broadband are that you can listen to music, watch videos, and listen to radio programs. This connection is always on. The prices are becoming more and more competitive with the different companies.
  • Dial up ISP’s- these are not very common anymore due to the option of DSL. However, there are still some individuals, because of location, that this is their only choice. The drawback is the inability to stream smoothly, and there is the issues of frequent disconnects.

Technologies That Can Help Your Business

Technology in the workplace has made it easier to run almost any kind of business. Although many think of computers as the reason there is a decrease in jobs for humans, that is not true. Technology was designed to help humans, not replace them.

Small Businesses Run More Efficiently

Even the lawn mower repair shop can run more efficiently with technology. Invoices can be created and stored on computers. Motor diagrams can be easily accessed via the Internet. As the business thrives and grows, a small repair shop can branch out and do on-site repairs. That would mean an increase in jobs for humans. With a smart phone, a repair person can actually bill and receive payment from anywhere.

Programs, like PayPal, can be used from anywhere with their mobile applications. There are other credit card services designed for mobile phones, too. Payment is immediate and the customer can opt to have a receipt emailed to him. As the business is growing, the prepaid blackberry curve could be used to start mobile billing. That way, there are no long-term contracts to worry about during slow months.

Digital Cameras

Since every business needs a website, it’s a good idea to have plenty of graphics and videos to help sell the products. With a digital camera the business owner can take pictures and videos and upload them instantly. A smart phone would be a good all-in-one solution. In fact, the Ustream app is compatible with many phone operating systems. It’s a live video stream.

Just think what real-time customer service, via a cell phone, could do to give a small business the marketing edge.

The Innovation Of New Technology

Many employers find themselves on a continual search for new and effective ways to use emerging technology in the workplace. One of the most common ways to do this is to offer online learning courses that help employees learn new skills and reinforce old knowledge so that they always are aware of relevant information.

Benefits of Technology in the Workplace

Often, employers notice that the use of computers or other technology in the workplace is very cost effective. Some online learning courses, for example, offer bulk access discounts where an entire company can be given access to a particular subject matter for a drastically discounted price. Also, since many workplaces already use computers frequently in the course of their daily activities, many employees report that there is not a large “learning curve” to deal with. In many cases, they are simply able to create an account that links them to the course content, and get started right away. Sometimes they can even access learning content through smartphones, like the Galaxy S.

Will Technology Replace the Need for Human Instruction?

Some people are anxious about the possibility that traditional learning methods will become obsolete, especially as computers continue to rise in popularity. In the case of some industries and subject matters, there is a higher probability that at some point in the future, computers may be able to do a job previously given to humans, especially when the efficient distribution of information is very important. But for many disciplines, where hands-on instruction is needed, it is difficult to be fully reliant on a computer. Only time will tell.

The Job Reducing Effect of Technology in the Manufacturing Sector

The benefits of technology surrounds people on a day to day basis. Everything that is used, played on, driven, worn and more has had a hands-off machine touch it in some way. Technology has created machines such as a robot placing a windshield on a car with a precision no human can attain, or an automated sewing machine stitching a pocket onto a pair of jeans.

With the introduction of these machines comes the reduction of jobs. Manufacturing tasks of many kinds had human involvement or intervention of some type. Now an automated machine or a robot does the job for a human. These jobs disappear in favor of the reduction in overhead cost. The purchase price of these highly automated machines rapidly pay for themselves. No more having to pay an hourly wage and benefits to a body. Instead, one or two technicians monitor the machines.

There are not many options for those who have seen their jobs taken over by equipment. Sometimes they are fortunate enough to be absorbed elsewhere in the company, others can take a retirement package, others are bought out and cut loose. Finding a new job is not an easy task for those who have been let go.

A small but significant upside does exist for using machinery in place of bodies. Many times the tasks were dangerous, and could threaten loss of life for those who lost focus for even a second. Not everyone is sad to see a machine take over the job. However, it remains to be seen how large of an effect technology will have on jobs in the manufacturing sector.

How Video Gaming Has Advanced

When video games were first introduced, you could only play a game by going to a local video arcade or convenience store and standing at a massive gaming console that could only play one game and required coins to be able to play. Things have advanced greatly since then.

How Gaming Has Evolved

The first major breakthrough with gaming was the invention of personal gaming consoles. These consoles could be purchased and hooked up to your own TV to be able to play. This was huge for video gamers. Since then, many consoles have been introduced and every few years, a new console hits the market with better graphics and innovative ways of playing, including the Xbox Kinect which doesn’t require controllers and instead follows the movements of players using voice commands instead of pressing buttons.

Use of the Internet in Gaming

Another advancement in gaming is the Internet.  This includes MMORPGs, social media gaming, gambling, and online bingo. Even personal consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are able to connect online so that players can play with each other. Instead of having LAN parties or inviting over all your friends to play together, gamers are now able to play with others from around the world through the use of the Internet. Console players are able to use programs such as Xbox Live to connect to other players while computer gamers play online with MMORPGs.

It’s truly amazing to see how gaming has changed in just the last three decades. It makes you wonder how things will change in the next three.

The Rise Of The Machine

Information Technology moves, innovates and progresses with it seems every blink of an eye!  One month you have the latest cool I-Phone.  Then within a year the Iphone 4 comes out and you are ashamed to even pull your old Iphone 3Gs from your pocket.  It may seem that technology is hurtling towards an unknown future, images of robots cleaning our dishes and taking our jobs may be in your dreams or even nightmares.  But don’t panic as that simply won’t happen quite yet.

Look back to the mid 1950s and the talk of space travel and living on the moon.  According to some historical predicitons made at the time we should be doing that now and we are quite away off.  The poor Beagle Two satellite got lost in space on its way to Mars and when was the last moon landing?

On the flipside, most of us in the western world use a computer daily. When the server dies in the office, we can’t possibly function and have to go home for the day. Or we simply pick up our android mobile phones and email from them while grabbing some lunch or waiting for the bus.  But with even the best technology comes user error, blips, viruses, breaches in security and all manner of technical issues.  Wherever there is information technology there will be a need for the I.T experts to support, install, upgrade and protect our hardware.

The machines may rise one day far far into the future but not just quite yet.

Technology Creating new Careers

There is arguably a disparity between the news coverage of jobs that technology eliminates and jobs that technology creates. You could chalk it up to the fact readers are more interested in tragedies than feel good stories. But the reality is that most likely people just don’t even realize some common jobs are around only because of new technology. So, when the next big digital thing comes around, take a moment to realize that a good deal of jobs come with it too.

With the introduction of search engines, for example, most people were eager to figure out how to locate some of the most obscure information around. It became easier than ever to find things like online bingo sites and movie downloads.  Others, however, were eager to figure out how to make money off of search engines. One such industry that has been highly successful is marketing. It created the practice of search engine optimization, and the lucrative careers of SEO specialists. By skillfully incorporating keyword placement in content, SEO specialists can increase the traffic to websites. Not only are some marketing companies dedicated solely to the practice, but many large companies employ their very own team of SEO specialists.

Similarly, the popularity of social media has created its own specialists. From marketers to advertising and public relations firms, social media specialists are in high demand. Their purpose is to construct messages and gauge their effectiveness on social media applications like Facebook and Twitter. Social media specialists have to be keen on timing and creative in their message since they have smaller space to work with. Those programs opened up a whole new way to connect to consumers, as well as a whole new expert to do it.

And what happens if a social media application or a smartphone or tablet crashes? You enlist the services of an information technology support technician. IT technicians are the television repairmen of today. Because of technology, there is even many divisions of IT support each concentrating on specific technologies.
