Any one person can now be reached in a multitude of ways, which can lower an employee’s tolerance for annoyances when they get a phone call, email, text and Facebook post from their boss.

With the growing reliance on technology, there is less of a reliance on people. That means workers spend less time interacting with other people than they do interacting with technology. This creates an atmosphere where co-workers don’t get to know each other very well or even learn how to work with each other. And because of the many features of technology, it’s very possible to lose one’s attention to it instead of taking the time to build valuable company camaraderie.

But what about whole industries being replaced by technology? The telegraph is a perfect example, replaced by the introduction of the telephone. Railroads nearly went extinct with the popularity of automobiles, but are currently making a comeback with more eco-conscious travelers. However, there are some industries that appear to be on the cusp of elimination because of more superior and popular technology much the same way as the telegraph.

Once such industry is the postal service. While it is true that things will always need to be sent, what gets sent may determine what happens to the USPS. Utility and financial service companies now offer paperless billing, thus eliminating bills in the mail. Meanwhile, the popularity of email and social media has made letter writing nearly a lost art. Additionally, people can email electronic cards for birthdays and holidays. The dwindling use of snail mail has led to postage rate increases, as well as layoffs at most post offices. Soon senders may have to FedEx their Christmas cards.

If no one is sending paper materials, what does that say about the industry that makes those materials, printing? Even with the advent of personal computer, printers didn’t have to worry because there were always things to print from books to magazines to brochures. But now that tablets have hit shelves there is a growing concern. Consumers can get the books and magazine they want faster and cheaper through downloading and the product they get is more interactive with video and web links. Plus, consumers are more environmentally conscious turning them off to using large amounts of paper.

The world is not defined by the massive manufacturers, the endless cubicle aisles. It’s instead shaped by the small business owner, by the success carved from living rooms — but this is a truth too often forgotten.

Competing with other companies is difficult. They have funds you can’t imagine and laborers you can’t afford. All of your transactions take place from your home, with a computer as your only aid.

It’s necessary therefore that you understand the importance of business technology and how to choose it. All decisions must be able to support you and your products. This is the only way you can hope to succeed.

It’s tempting for small business owners to be swayed by the endless varieties, the always-evolving applications. That’s a luxury you can’t afford, however. Find only what is relevant to your company. Choose functions that reflect your goals. Don’t waste hard-drive space with programs that will never be used. This will cause your system to lag and your memory to fail.

Budgeting is an unfortunate word and an even more unfortunate reality. Small businesses lack the funds of their larger competitors. This means that all software must be cost-effective. Select only what can be justified, sparing yourself high prices and too few rewards. Tailor your system with good sense and put the savings toward areas such as online advertising.

Three: All Things Universal

The world is your client. You must seek out new cities, new countries, new ideas. It’s wise therefore — when trying to battle others — that you choose programs that can be applied to all platforms. Use office suites that have recognized formats, keeping you from being unable to properly communicate with consumers, which would only tarnish your reputation and cause distrust.

You cannot compete through size. You must instead compete through wisdom. Use software to improve your business and your life.

If you are a telecommuter for another company, then you should still consider yourself working on their time even though you don’t have to show up at the office. If working at home, it should be known to family and friends when you are busy and are not to be bothered. Many are under the impression that working at home means more free time and less work. But in a telecommuting position you are demanded to always show results, which can take going the extra mile at all times. It’s also imperative that clients or your company know when you’ll be at home working, and when you’re home off the clock.

For someone that is telecommuting on their own, whether as a freelancer or a business owner, it is much harder to be able to follow a set schedule. However, the majority of injuries that occur in a workplace are from internal accidents. Businesses that have positions where injury is a high risk usually set up levels of prevention to avoid accidents. An example of such technology employed include sensors that will detect a person in a hazardous area or emit alerts to staff of a chemical leak. When the risk is very high, such as moving toxic materials or reaching inventory in high locations, computerize robotics are used to accomplish the task with placing a human in harms way as little as possible.

There is also an indirect safety benefit from a lot of technology that most people don’t realize. That is, with all of the communicating technology from email to text to web-conferencing, there a fewer employees that have to go out on business trips. And less people on the road means less auto accidents.

Companies waste millions of dollars every year trying out new things that just end in failure. However, the growing capabilities of software is changing the odds for businesses. With software, companies have more tools to see, test and get feedback about new products before they even build a prototype.

The many design software programs available have made it possible to put a future product to paper, or screen, with the ability to manipulate it without wasting any resources. Businesses can get a visual on products first before deciding to follow through. They can create products in 3D or in colorful layouts. It is a money saver for fashion designers that might want to play around with colors or stitching.

In every company’s research and development division employees are asking the same question: Will it work? Before, businesses just had to find out by building it. Now, powerful software programs are available to engineering professionals to put new devices in simulators to test their performance. In addition, financial institutions can crunch long-term numbers or algorithms through mathematical software simulators to test their effectiveness, with all conditions being equal, or not.

If a new product has been judged by executives as looking sharp, and it passed all the test with flying colors, it still won’t matter if the public doesn’t like it. By building an interactive PDF or website, businesses can distribute information about their new product to potential customers for feedback. This focus group can then add or mark changes they would like to see in a finished product.

But what would happen if two ant colonies combined, or two businesses? The symbiotic relationship between businesses has led to the idea of networking externally, from business to business. The advantages are two-fold. One, it brings in financial benefits for each business because, two, it allows each one to work more efficiently to accomplish their respective goals.

A common example of businesses networking externally is an FTP site. Here, a company is granted access to a file sharing system in which companies can add, download and share files or other data. It is an ideal system for businesses that have to share very large files. Folders can be locked to keep away prying eyes from other businesses.

Other businesses may enter agreements to network with each other through one of their websites. In this way, usually one company provides a service for the other, but will hold all of that company’s material, be it inventory or financial data or both. In exchange the other company agrees to only use them for that particular service. An example is a distributor and its manufacturing clients. The clients would then log onto their distributor’s website to retrieve information about their product’s movements.

A hybrid of external and internal networking is when one company moves into the same building as the other and they share information with each other over a regular computer network. While the two businesses stay separate, they each run on the network and exchange files and material that may be useful to each other. Each can then share the maintenance of the network, as well as assist each other in building their businesses.
